OJU is a Yoruba word for a deep gaze. It is also the name of Cine Sesc's Black cinema showcase, which screens classics by Black directors alongside new work by contemporary filmmakers. I was invited to create its identity with designer Laryssa Ramos and the risograph studio Risotrip. Drawing on the meaning of the word, and on research into cultural spaces in Brazil's peripheries and Black cinema, we read the showcase as a gaze into the unconscious: "deep dreams", a return to memory that honours the history of the Black movement. The typefaces come from historical printed matter of the movement. Every element, from photos and texts to logos, was printed in risograph, scanned and applied to print and digital, like old film archives: nostalgic, dynamic, open to possible futures.
